Independent Movies Vs Studio Movies
Improvements in technology have made the practical elements of film making much less complicated and costly, and there is a debate about independent movies vs. studio movies, but all most of the public really wants is to be able to watch a good movie.
Hollywood and the other major movie studios no longer have the grip on the movie industry that they enjoyed throughout a large part of the 20th century. "Thank goodness for that" some may say, but somebody has to make the movies. So who can realistically compete with the Hollywood movie making machine. Many extremely rich, wealthy and famous actors have come unstuck when financing and producing their own movies (remember "Waterworld," Kevin Costner definitely does, but probably not many other people).
Independent Movie Makers
Enhanced and improved technology has made movie making much easier, at least the theoretical and practical parts, but of course, you still need to have the vision and the talent to make a movie that's actually worth watching. The internet has unleashed a whole new age of independent movie makers who want to show the world what they're made of, but let's be honest, although these independent movie makers all have a vision and are trying to make a name for themselves, there are very few of them who don't harbor the thoughts of producing big budget studio movies as their ultimate goal. Like kids in a candy store, just think of what they could produce with a multi million dollar budget.
There are a handful of successful actors who go out of their way to support independent movies and are more than happy to be involved in these projects, but very often they've picked up a few big fat pay checks from Hollywood first. It's nice to be able to afford to have a choice, isn't it?
Studio Movies
United Artists, Dreamworks, Disney, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, we're so used to seeing these names at the beginning of our movies and it all says one thing, Hollywood. But let's be honest, there's one reason why Hollywood got so big in the first place, they churned out thousands of movies which people actually wanted to watch! They've made movies which people enjoyed and have filled the seats at cinemas for decades, making one box office smash after another. Although we might complain about not enough new material, and very often we seem to be dished up with one sequel after another – Back to the Future, Jaws, Rocky, Rambo, Star Wars, Harry Potter - we've still turned out in our millions to watch these much awaited films, if only to see if they're as good as the last one! They seldom are as good, but once Hollywood has found a 'winning formula' they certainly like to milk it down to the last drop.
At the end of the day, does it matter who made the movie? It's human nature to be on the side of the underdog, and it's important for talent to have a showcase and be able to be seen without the backing of a movie studio, but when you see a movie for the first time there's really only one thing that counts – did you enjoy it?
