Who Makes Movies?
If you ever wondered who makes movies then perhaps you should just take a look at the credits at the end, seriously, it takes a lot of people and money to make a movie, and you need to add to that a lot of talent to make a really good movie.
If maybe eighty per cent of the people who work in the bars, hotels and burger joints in Hollywood are struggling actors, then the other twenty per cent are surely wannabe film makers. What a line – you're beautiful, do you want to be in the movies? Wonder how many of the potential young starlets have fallen for that one, straight off the late night greyhound.
Well, if you think that's bad, every wannabe movie maker hitting on poor vulnerable young women (well some of them are vulnerable and the majority of them are poor!), what about the real movie directors. You can just imagine poor old Steven Spielberg trying to enjoy a quiet coffee with friends, with every waitress singing him the same old line, "I'm not really a waitress, I'm an actress, I'm just doing this until I get my big break", and then promptly going into the fake orgasm scene from 'When Harry Met Sally', or maybe doing a Marilyn Monroe. Give him a break! Trouble is, he should have realized that lots of famous people wear glasses and a beard as a disguise to avoid all that. Hmmm, obviously hasn't thought that one through.
Who Makes Movies
- Directors - So do the directors make the movies? Well, they are certainly one of the major players in actually visualizing and physically filming the movie.
- Producers – Very often the producer will have a final say, even over the creative control of the movie. Sometimes the director also produces the movie (hmm, does that save a bit of cash or does it double his salary?) Nifty move if you can pull it off.
- Special Effects – Special effects has come a long way from banging coconut shells and crunching gravel (hang on, that was on radio), I mean, sloshing a toy boat around in a bowl of water or squirting tomato sauce all over a nice white shirt. These days the special effects can really make or break a movie.
- Film Editors – Well, they might not make the original fabric, but they certainly take some responsibility for molding the raw material into an haute couture outfit, don't they?
- Screenwriters – somebody has to tell the actors what to say! Although screenwriters are responsible for the outline of the script though, very often the director or producer will change some of it – just because they can.
Well, I suppose the answer to who makes movies, is really all of the above, along with a great host of others, otherwise it wouldn't take a good ten minutes to roll the credits at the end would it? But seriously, movie makers can only make movies if they can find the financial backing, and that's often down to the big production companies.
Does Hollywood Make Movies
Well, they certainly did, and they certainly still do, but these days there's lots of competition to the Hollywood movie making machine, and as technology improves it's actually easy to make a movie with much less expensive equipment. Just think about 'The Blair Witch Project' which was shot from mostly amateur equipment. It was certainly different but made a big impact on the movie industry – some say that the original budget was only $20,000, but in reality it is estimated that nearer $500,000 was spent by the time it was actually ready to hit the cinema.
These days then, anybody can make a movie with a relatively small amount of equipment, good grief, if you can video your dog water-skiing with your mobile phone, then movie making is certainly getting a lot less technical than it used to be.
